The thing is, you have to keep on beating the game to be able to afford the more expensive stuff, and only 1 route(the game has 4 starting areas, all with multiple paths throughout) really pays off. You have to be able to complete the game to make money(picking up gold bars and stuff throughout) to unlock stuff(about 6 extra characters, extra versions of playable characters, cheats, and other things), by buying it. The only down side, to me, is that it has a store, which feels too modern-ish.
